@@mindhead2005 No, that's not the one, the one with a f hole is piezo only I think, mine is solid body with two Bartolinis plus piezo.

They are a victim of their own success in many ways. They appealed to a certain demographic maybe, but the consistency and quality of their product has continued to improve. They’re original designs, too, and credit where it’s due there. How many brands are just doing their own take on Fender designs? These are cheaper than the old Japanese models but better in my opinion. Some players think they won’t be taken seriously showing up with an Ibanez bass. Theres a lot of brand snobbery in this business

That is sadly true,@@mindhead2005, and I must sadly admit to having let that snobbery conquer me. It definitely counts for something to know that grandscale professionals have not only played Ibanez instruments (including Mel Schacher of Grand Funk Railroad and Sting) but also (in the cases of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani) had signature-edition models designed for them. I must admit I was tempted by a 5-string bass model with active electronics being marketed by my old retailer back in 2000 (when I got a Deluxe Active Jazz bass instead). If I’d gone with it, that would’ve been a killer model for me that I would still be playing to this date. I let that brand snobbery (and the iconography of Fender) influence my choice.

Never too late! These things are SO inexpensive for what you get The SR300E is the 4 string version and is such good value €350 here!! I’ve been guilty of the same mindset

@@mindhead2005 I’ll got one eventually for posterity. Luckily, I did manage to acquire a Status King Bass Artist, and like you, I’m a bit tidier with the narrower string spacing. Anything bigger than a Jazz bass neck with standard spacing and 34 scale is awkward for me 😂

The intonation you can do by shifting the saddle as required Let off the screw at the side of the bridge and push the saddle in the direction required It will also move in place in a sort of bow shape to fine tune

Hi Mind where I am a little confused at is that on the Synapse bass I done see I the saddles since the Pizio bridge is there. When I google the subject most folks say there's not I direct way to do this on the Synapse . But I did find this 1.Loosen the set screw (turn counter-clockwise) on side of bridge. 2. Set the intonation of the two center strings first. ... 3. The piezo saddle is mounted in a slot that is shaped like a bow-tie. ... 4.Re-tune and check intonation.

They’re back in stock now with a pickup selector, which was my biggest bugbear Manufacturers have been using laurel for decades, and it’s got very similar physical properties to rosewood. I’m not so sure it won’t stand the test of time, myself, but time will tell. 🤷‍♂️ My Steinbergers and a couple of my Ibanez basses have phenolic boards, which is sheets of cloth impregnated with resin. That’s similar to Micarta, which is on my Sigma 12 string. Musicman and Ric have been using pao ferro for a LONG time With the way wood species are endangered we are going to see less rosewood and ebony and more alternatives I’ve had some of my Harley Bentons for many years and my brother’s HB tele I bought for him in 2003, I think. No issues so far but I know the climate in some peoples regions can be unkind to guitars generally, They ARE cheap instruments and heavy use could well take its toll on any budget guitar. HB ARE great for trying a style of bass that you might not get to if it was dearer. For example I got the 50s P style bass and quickly figured it wasn’t for me without dropping €400 on a Squier or €800 on a used Japanese Fender. :)

@@mindhead2005 HB are great basses they are manufactured in China and Indonesia hence why the price point is so low.however in highly produced basses your gonna deal with the long standing tenets of “hit or miss” you may have a mass production bass that is great. Others not so much. However, there is no shortage in Ebony or Rosewood. This was manufacturers way of cutting cost and being able to charge similar prices for cheaper instruments. Example back in the day. They used to put Rosewood on Mexican, Fenders basses and Squires. For marketing purposes they have demurred. Eventually the consumers would begin to wonder “why”. So fender and other brands used “sophistry” to feign as if there were shortages to brand their cheaper lines at a certain price point while having an excuse to justify the cost of let’s say an American vintage ii or American professional that uses “rosewood” {emphasis added}. oooohhhh higher quality so pay more right?!!! Totally B.S. They’ve been whipping out a crap ton of American vintage ii jazz and precisions with no complaints on shortages of rosewood. Furthermore, companies like Warmouth and Musikcraft never complain on getting supplies of rosewood. Fender is a trip. Simultaneously Harley Benton wouldn’t use rosewood at the price point that they sale their guitars. So they use “scrap” wood that cost nothing for bundles and sell it. It still sounds good though so hey. You can put instruments in musician pants without breaking the bank. Like back in the day when a PRS cost $25,000 for “Brazilian rosewood” oooohhhh. 😂😂

Brazilian! It’s so much better, right? Lol! The main reason in Europe is the CITES restrictions. It’s a pain in the arse for even the likes of me to ship rosewood and ebony to certain parts of the world. Ebony IS endangered because only one in ten trees is actually consistently black inside. The rest have streaks of lighter coloured wood So they cut down nine wastefully. Taylor have started letting consumers know that “ebony” will mean a non uniform appearance from here on in. With companies making a profit, money is going to be the driver behind everything ultimately, of course b Add to that, as you point out, tiered marketing. Make the ordinary appear extraordinary and you can charge more. Look at how previously affordable Mexican basses fall prices wise now! Crazy. Sterling by Musicman used to be inexpensive but look at what the Ray 34 costs now Manufacturers seem to be shoehorning more models in at the lower end to push the previously low and mid models up price wise.

@@mindhead2005 you’re exactly right. It’s a marketing gimmick. Fender just shipped out thousands of American vintage ii to many retailers all “rosewood” {emphasis added}. They sold a lot price point is about $2200. They are so full of it man. I agree with you on ebony. That may be legitimately short in supply. “Rosewood” is not.

Don’t they always? Laziness I think to a certain degree. Why do we all have to record with and use the same bass? If it’s someone else’s session, use what they tell you. If it’s your band, tell him to live with it.

@@mindhead2005 the funny thing is that the guy actually cranked the best tone I've heard from that bass in the final mix - 2011 album by Evangelist "In Partibus Infidelium", and we specifically wanted the bass to be very audible. I don't think a Fender P would sound that unique...

Dig, Mr. McDonnell. All through the time that I’ve been a musician, Ibanez is a brand that I have resisted owning instruments by, partly as a backlash to many of the musicians I have known who played them. Strangely enough, that’s not to do with the instruments and how I associate them with people treating me unkindly all these years.

They’re so consistently good, the newer stuff even moreso. The spec of these basses for the price is crazy. I now have two five strings as well!

Yes. It depends how we use "best", what it means to us. The current crop of technically brilliant and proficient players are enviable but do not wow me with their inventiveness, originality or musicality like M8ck did and still does.

@mindhead2005 That's great to know , I never had a 5 string . The massive 130 most come with ( I think?) put me off. That's really obvious to put thinner strings on but never crossed my mind . Even though I do it on 4 string basses... I always fancied a 6 string bass but tuned e to e like a guitar. Actually it would be d to d just to complicate matters as I tune down a whole step for my ageing vocals. So many things still to try. ✌️♥️

@@springy-2112 for live work a five is handy, not so much for the lower notes but for positioning etc. Did you look at the Squier Bass VI? Sounds like exactly what you're after?
